Kinesio Taping

Kinesio Taping is a technique that utilizes Kinesio tapes for therapeutic purposes. Kinesio tapes are elastic, cotton, waterproof aids that contain an adhesive substance. They can be applied in many ways to the affected area and assist the body’s natural healing process. Kinesio Taping is proven to be efficient in healing sports injuries and painful musculoskeletal conditions.

Mechanism of Kinesio Tapes on Muscle Activity

Kinesio Taping is a noninvasive, nonpharmacological technique based on the elastic properties of Kinesio tapes. Once applied to the stretched muscle, they produce traction on the skin, which leads to epidermis lifting (surface layer of the skin) and pressure reduction in the mechanoreceptors located in the deeper layers of the skin. By stimulating mechanoreceptors, Kinesio tapes are fixing the function of weakened muscles and bringing the stability of the joints. Kinesio taping encourages the regeneration of injured tissue by reducing the swelling from post-injury. A decrease in pressure leads to decreased pain, which allows for lymph to drain and increase blood flow to the area.

Basic Principles of Tape Application

Kinesio Taping Method balances muscles and restores lost function by stimulating natural recovery mechanisms of the body. Tape properties are similar to the skin in terms of weight, thickness, and elasticity. They do not contain any pharmacological agents, and anyone can use them without any harmful consequences. There are two basic taping techniques: from insertion to origin and the second technique, from origin to insertion.

Indications and Contraindications

Please note that the application of tapes by an unauthorized person may lead to worsening of the patient medical condition. Tape therapy proved to be great combined with other therapeutic procedures. Depending on the medical condition, it is recommended to simultaneously use the tapes with other modalities of physical therapy (cryotherapy, hydrotherapy, manual therapy, electrotherapy, acupuncture, electrostimulation, athletic tapes).

Kinesio Taping Preparation and Recovery

Since Kinesio tapes do not contain any pharmacological agents, no special preparation is required, except for the skin that must be clean and waxed. Kinesio tape can be applied in an X, Y, I, or fan pattern, depending on the goal. The effect lasts 3-5 days. Since the strips are waterproof, the patient can bathe or do water sports during the treatment. After applying the Kinesio tape, the patient can return to normal activities. After recovery, Kinesio tapes must be removed safely without hurting the skin.

Kinesio Taping Benefits
